earthquake
Christchurch has been though a lot in the last year – you would have to be living in a cave not to know of the recent earthquakes that have all but wiped out the city’s business district!
Cruz was just another victim – the old club in Lichfield Street was flattened by the building next door collapsing onto us, but thankfully we were closed at the time and nobody was injured. That is a lot luckier than a lot of people, and we have also been able to pick ourselves up and get back in business quicker than most ……..
CRUZ IS BACK IN BUSINESS AND OPERATING FROM A SAFE LITTLE BUNKER OF A BUILDING AT 77 VICTORIA STREET
If you can’t find us on the corner of Peterborough & Victoria Streets (opposite the Casino) then just look for the rainbow flags that are always flying in the breeze. It’s a very prominent location, and as always we make no attempt to hide ourselves away, and nor should we!
Our last word on earthquakes (because we believe you have all had enough of hearing about them) is that we have recently had a full geotech and structural engineering assessment of the new club, and although it was built in the 1970’s it currently meets 100% of the old (pre 2011) earthquake code and 73% of the new code. It has sailed through every quake so far with nothing more than cracked plaster, and it’s going to take a lot now to close us down again!
The new club is nowhere near big enough to meet all the needs of our customers, but by the end of March 2012 we will have expanded into the larger 1st-floor space above, and there will be a proper nightclub again. For now, Cruz appreciates your support, and we are working as fast as we can to restore normality to the city’s gay entertainment scene. Once that development is complete we will again have room for a pool table and a proper dance-floor, plus an outdoor balcony again for those dirty ‘ol smokers
CRUZ is open Wednesday to Sunday each week from 7pm till 5am, with a DJ playing chart and dance favourites Thursday to Saturday. There’s a $5 cover-charge after 10pm at the weekend
During the daytime we share the premises with a cafe’ that has also been displaced from their building by quake damage. You will see the signs for Procope Cafe’ on the building from 7am till late afternoon. Please pop in and support the guys there, because they played a big part in us being able to get up and running again as fast as we did. Great food, great coffee, and a “family” barista
THANKS TO YOU ALL FOR THE THE SUPPORT THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED THIS LAST 12 MONTHS – AFTER 30 YEARS OPERATING GAY CLUBS IN CHRISTCHURCH, TONY AND BRUCE ARE STILL GOING STRONG!
